Physical Education (PE)
Subject Leader - Mrs McFarlane
Children are taught PE in line with the National Curriculum.
Vision
At Rufford Primary and Nursery School we aim to provide a PE curriculum that allows pupils to develop key skills to become competent at movement, agility, balance and co-ordination and maintaining healthy lifestyles. We ensure there is opportunity for pupils to be reflective on their own abilities and skills so they can develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success. At Rufford we understand the importance of staying active and healthy in order to succeed well across the whole curriculum.
How we teach PE
Physical Education at Rufford Primary School is based on pupils being taught skills across a broad range of activities and sports. Our PE curriculum is broken down into 6 main areas including acquiring and developing skills, evaluation and improving, health and fitness, dance, games and gymnastics. In addition to these, Key Stage 2 pupils will develop skills in swimming, athletics and outdoor and adventurous activities. Pupils are encouraged to participate in a range of extra-curricular activities and competitions. We aim for an inclusive PE curriculum and provide opportunities for all pupils to be part of competitions and sports festivals. We have introduced challenges and activities that create a personal best ethos so all pupils can be involved and participate. We engage with local sports providers to enhance our curriculum including links with the National Ice Arena and Nottingham Tennis Centre. Alongside these local links we have specialist professional sports coaches and teachers deliver sessions for games, dance and gymnastics within the school setting.
More recently we have focussed on improving pupil’s fitness and developing their understanding of how physical activity can improve their health and wellbeing. We have introduced a weekly mile and lunch time challenges to enable pupils to improve their fitness outside of the formal PE sessions. We want Rufford pupils to be happy both mentally and physically.
