Vision

The History curriculum at Rufford will helps pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. It aims to inspire pupils’ curiosity to know more about the past. Teaching equips pupils to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments, and develop perspective and judgement. Our History lessons help pupils to understand the complexity of people’s lives, the process of change, the diversity of societies and relationships between different groups, as well as their own identity and the challenges of their time.

Throughout children’s time at Rufford they explore a range of topics in which they develop knowledge about different periods in history, both locally and internationally. Children revisit themes such as democracy and civilisation in various contexts to develop a genuine understanding of how these terms can be applied to different times and places. 

What does this look like at Rufford?

Children are taught History within wider topic work.  Often the subject will be the main driver for the half term's learning.  A clear understanding of the topic supports work in other subjects, like English, Geography and art. For children to know more and remember more in each area of History studied, they refer to knowledge organisers regularly at the start and end of the topic but also at regular intervals during the topic.  Children will often use knowledge organisers to complete brief warm up tasks at the start of lessons in order to recap and consolidate prior learning.  Children’s History learning is celebrated on classroom walls, in weekly achievement assemblies and on Weduc.

On display in all classrooms is an age-appropriate timeline to reinforce skills and understanding of chronology. In the Early Years and KS1, this timeline places children's current and past learning in chronological context. As they move through KS2, children's knowledge of events through time is expanded as they explore and encounter further historical eras.
